The Victor Harbor course used for the 4 Island Ocean Race has a
fantastic long down wind leg plus the added ingredient of four
islands including Wright, Granite, Seal and Pullen. These islands
not only allow a visual treat to paddlers who race around these
landscape icons, but they heavily influence race strategies for
paddlers.
One of the skills of ocean racing is that of using the
conditions to your advantage. Where are wind waves at their best?
Is it worth deviating from the shortest line to benefit from these?
How can I best navigate to the next turn? The presence of four
islands introduces factors such as shelter from wind, impact on
tidal influences, taking on or avoiding the significant recoil on
the seaward side of the Islands and when to duck out of an island's
Lee?
